Symptoms of Estrogen Deficiency

Hot flashes and night sweats are common symptoms of estrogen deficiency that occur during menopause. Many other signs and symptoms of estrogen deficiency are not necessarily recognized as being related to lack of estrogen. You could be developing metabolic disorders that lead to heart disease, fractures, diabetes and other illnesses related to inflammation and obesity. It is important for you to consider your overall risks and determine if low estrogen levels are a contributing factor. If you have any of the following symptoms of estrogen deficiency, have your estrogen levels measured and consider hormone replacement therapy.

Symptoms of estrogen deficiency:

  • Hot flashes and not sweats
  • Dry, itchy skin and vagina
  • Painful intercourse
  • Mood swings and irritability
  • Forgetfulness
  • Weight gain
  • Fatigue

Other signs and symptoms of estrogen deficiency

You may also have underlying metabolic disorders that are asymptomatic and are not necessarily attributed to symptoms of estrogen deficiency. Yet low estrogen can be a strong contributing factor to accelerating the development of many health ailments. Having any of these would be another reason to have your estrogen levels checked and consider hormone replacement therapy. These are:

  • High lipids (cholesterol) which can lead to hardening of the arteries and heart disease
  • Elevated blood sugar and insulin which can lead to diabetes and weight gain
  • Bone loss which can lead to fractures
  • Leptin resistance which can cause weight gain
  • Metabolic syndrome (fat around your midline, insulin resistance, and high triglycerides and LDL, the bad cholesterol with low HDL, the good cholesterol)

Symptoms of estrogen deficiency may be a sign that other serious illnesses may be developing and metabolic disturbances may be a sign that you have low levels of estrogen.
